With a population of over one and a half billion, it isn’t surprising that India ranks third in the largest consumer of electricity. Co-incidentally, India is also the third largest producer of electricity. At the end of the first quarter, i.e. March 31, 2020, the national electric grid in India has an installed capacity of 370.106 GW.
There are a total of 28 states and eight Union Territories in the country. Fossil Fuels, especially coal, is the primary producer of electricity and it produced about 75% of the electricity produced in 2018-19.
The Indian Government has invested a significant amount in renewable energy sources and feel that there isn’t a need for another non-renewable power plant for the next few years (estimated up to 2027).
Rajasthan, which has the largest area, gets the highest national share, with 10.55%, followed by Madhya Pradesh at 9.37%. Chandigarh gets the lowest national share, with a mere 0.03% share.
