The human race had used up all the resources for the year on August 22nd – 131 days before the end of the year! It is more shocking that we used all the energy resources (for the year) in the fourth week of July last year. The COVID-19 pandemic could only slow down the consumption by three weeks. Astonishing!
This pops up a question – Why haven’t we used or invested more in renewable energy? A small idea on what Renewable energy (if you didn’t know) – it is defined as the contribution of renewables to total primary energy supply. As seen from the report below, they include energy from sources like geothermal, solar, wind, tide and wave. Here’s a visualization of renewable energy being used as the primary source of energy from 2002 to 2017.
While countries like Australia and the United States of America have invested more in renewable energy, it is also saddening to see graph of countries like India and Russia, spiraling downwards. A few South American and African countries possess an excess of renewable energy sources, which they distribute it to the neighboring countries.
With the need of the hour to save energy sources for future generations, countries all around the world should consider renewable energy sources as their primary energy sources and start investing more in it. The human race consumes around 60% more than the earth can yield in a year – which means we need 1.6 planets to sustain at this rate. What are your thoughts about this? Let us know in the comments!
